As you make your way underneath the Train Station tunnels heading into the Magic Kingdom, you’ll find both City Hall and the Fire Station of the fictitious “Engine Co. 71” (the number 71 came from 1971, the year Walt Disney World opened) on the left side of Town Square. Unlike it’s Disneyland counterpart, the WDW Fire Station did not house an apartment for Walt Disney (an apartment in WDW for his family was to be built inside the Castle). Also, this one is not to be confused with the real fire department of Walt Disney World, the Reedy Creek Fire Department (RCFD).

“The Disney World property is protected by a full time paid fire department, the Reedy Creek Improvement District (RCID) Fire Department. They provide fire protection and emergency medical services to the parks and they also respond as mutual aid to the surrounding counties. By the 1990's their were 4 stations, 2 stations were standard type fire stations and 2 were double wide mobile homes. There are about 200 firefighters, who work on 3 platoons, with one platoon on duty at all times. The firefighters are on duty for 24hrs. and then they are off duty for 48hrs.. ^obviously that information hasn’t been updated in a while, but I don’t think Disney has lost a building to fire in the last 15 years either (in addition to the “first 25” the article refers to above). Very impressive.

This shot is nothing fancy, but it is a good example of how a tilt-shift lens can be used to get close to taller buildings and help keep vertical lines straight to avoid convergence if you’re after that effect. That being said, I’m not sure I’ll be “straightening up” any more buildings at WDW. These types of shots are very technical in nature, taking a lot of time to execute and I just don’t feel the resulting static building images pack any kind of punch or "wow" factor that I like to see in Disney photography.

just cracked it open, inspecting the damage. Actually didn't look that bad, I guess I was expecting something more dramatic. At this point I had never seen inside an engine in a really hands on way, so this was pretty sweet. You can see the tops of the pistons are black...wanted to clean them but wasn't sure how to do so without contaminating the engine with debris. I think getting a shop vac hooked up with a stiff brush would have done the trick.
Getting to this point was very difficult for me. To remove the upper head the cams have to be aligned, and then held as the springs from the valves release tension as the upper head is unbolted and lifted off. But, I was able to do it by myself.

REVIEW:The joys of the four-cycle engine are many. First, they run on straight gas, so there's no need to prepare an oil-gas mixture. Second, they give you more torque at a greater range of speeds. Third, they run quieter than two-cycle engines and produce fewer emissions. As with most good things, however, there is also a downside: Two-cycle engines will give you more horsepower, pound for pound, than four-cycle engines (in other words, they're lighter per HP).
The question, then, is whether you're willing to put up with a little more weight or sacrifice some HP in order to have a clean, quiet cut. (In some states, this decision may already have been made for you-there seems to be a trend toward mandating that two-cycle engines be retrofitted with catalytic converters.)
